Renters Insurance

What is renter's insurance, and why is it important? Renter's insurance is to the renter what homeowner's insurance is to the homeowner. Your landlord's insurance policy usually only covers the actual structure in which you are living, not your personal property. So if a fire or flood destroys everything you own, you aren't protected unless you have renter's insurance.

When shopping for renter's insurance, it is especially important that you compare prices. Find out if your state law dictates a minimum coverage, and then get a price quote on that coverage from at least three different companies. You might be surprised how much rates differ from company to company. Also, if you are a student, check to see if your parents' homeowner's insurance policy covers you before you pay for your own policy. Some homeowner's policies extend to protect dependent children who are away at school.
