Studio Apartments
Studio apartments are the least expensive and most basic types of rental units available. They can also be the most confusing to research. Terms like "bachelor," "studio," and "efficiency" are used almost interchangeably in newspaper ads, since they all indicate an apartment without a separate sleeping area. To set the record straight, "efficiency" is actually the official term for a one-room apartment that contains either full or efficiency kitchen facilities. "Studio" originally referred to an efficiency apartment that doubled as an artist's studio, but it has evolved to become the most common term for a one-room apartment. A "bachelor" apartment does not have a kitchen, but it may come with a mini-fridge and microwave.
If you're on a tight budget but can't qualify for Low Income Apartments, a studio apartment may be your only realistic option. But don't worry about feeling cramped; many studio apartments can be quite open, airy, and luxurious.
